The Fishing

The Chetumal Bay is an extensive water body of approximately 1615 miles surrounded by distinctive tropical flora and fauna, mangroves and amazing natural zones with tall trees and regional vegetation. Traditionally, sportfishing experience has been practiced in the areas nearby the Xcalak port, but the Fly Fishing Chetumal team has invested enough time in exploring and studying the recently discovered areas sited at the bay that show a promising potential for fly fishing.

The fishing day starts at 6:30 a.m. where breakfast will be served at your hotel. At 7:30 a.m we will take you to the dock. This will take around 5 to 10 minutes where your guide and boat will be ready just waiting for you to sail. Fishing will last between 8 and 9 hours depending on the fishing plan established by your guide. We usually get back at 4 or 5 p.m.

It is important to mention that depending on the weather conditions (wind and sea) the travel to the fishing zones could take from 30 to 45 minutes, so we suggest you prepare your fishing material before the trip. The boat has rod racks at both sides to ensure the security of your gear.

The trip includes a yeti cooler with some meals and beverages for two fishermen and the guide. We generally offer ham, chicken or tuna sandwich and some snacks as cookies, treats, and refreshments. If you are allergic to any kind of food, please let us know in advance.

Species

In these areas we can fish the 4 most wanted species by the fly fishing anglers: bonefish, permit, tarpon and snook, being the bonefish the one that is mostly sighted. The better chances to fish big tarpon and snook are when the cold front season is active at the end of the year.

At the “Species & Season” section of this website, you can find the best seasons for fishing the different species at the bay as the necessary gear to successfully be able to fish.
