Your Destination
Chetumal is the capital city of Quintana Roo state, with a population approaching 136,000 inhabitants, with a history that takes its origin from a military post created by the government during the start of the 20th century in which the city operated as a customs port service until the foundation of the Payo Obispo village, with a Brittish-Caribbean architecture of wood houses widely known for being the last border of Mexico. It is located really close to the Río Hondo mouth, that is a natural frontier between Mexico and Belize.
Tourist Attractions
Bacalar
Bacalar is considered a Pueblo Mágico, in
addition to its outstanding seven color lagoon which preserves important
historical mysticism from pirates and the Mayan culture. It is located approximately
at 30 minutes by the #307 highway from the Chetumal City.
It is the ideal place to enjoy its crystalline waters
and history. You could also visit some places like the San Felipe fortress, the
San Joaquin Church, the Blue Cenote and the Bacalar rapids. In addition, the
restaurants are full of Yucatán gastronomy and other culinary options.
Calderitas
A few minutes drive through the Chetumal
Boulevard, you will find the Calderitas community, an old
fisherman port. History recalls that the name Calderitas was born because
when its first villagers arrived they found some small calderas (clay pots)
where the ancient Mayan civilization crafted their own clay tools. Through the
boardwalk, you will find approximately 20 restaurants in which you can enjoy
delicious seafood of the highest quality.
Archeological Sites
If you are interested in knowing more about the
Mayan culture during your stay in Chetumal City, one of your choices is to
visit the archeological site of Kohunlich, sited at about 45 minutes from the
city. Its principal attraction is the mascarones (masks) temple.
Dzibanche and Kinichná are an 80 minute drive from Chetumal City and their principal attractions are the owls, cormorant and toucan temples. Both sites are located at the heart of the Mayan jungle and you can reach them through the #186 Chetuma l- Escarcega highway.
Oxtankah
This archeological site is located just 20 minutes away
from the Chetumal City, taking the Chetumal - Calderitas road. When you reach the
community, you need to follow 3 more miles to the north where you will find the
signs to access the zone.
It was in this region where the very first Mayan
civilization lived for hundreds of years and they developed an architectural heritage
like the Petén, Guatemala style. Oxtankah is considered the very first,
biggest, and most important Mayan civilization site founded in the Chetumal Bay.
Mayan Culture Museum
The museum dates back to the different eras of the
Mayan culture development. It has many rooms with a principal exhibition. You shouldn´t miss the chance to visit this great place during your stay in the city.
How to Get Here
Our vehicles are equipped with all the amenities to provide
you a convenient, secure and comfortable trip. We can travel from 4 to 12 passengers
on the same trip. We will pick you up from your arrival destination and leave
you at the entrance of your hotel in Chetumal City.
There are a few ways to get to Chetumal City:
1.- Flight to Cancun, Quintana Roo, where one of our vehicles
will get you to Chetumal City. This trip takes approximately 4 hours from the
Cancun airport to the hotel.
2.- Flight to Chetumal City, Quintana Roo. For this option,
you must find a flight with a stop at Mexico City International Airport and
then take another flight of about 2 hours to Chetumal City. The time from
Chetumal airport to your hotel is about 15 minutes.
3.- Flight to Mérida, Yucatán, where one of our vehicles will get you to Chetumal City. This trip takes approximately 4 hours from the Mérida airport to the hotel.
